About this place
Baden-Baden consecrated a new cemetery in 1843 because the town was growing. The Spitalfriedhof in the Rotenbach valley, which had served the town's dead for four centuries, had become too small. The Hauptfriedhof replaced it and remains the central municipal cemetery today.
The regional newspaper Badische Neueste Nachrichten counts it among the cemeteries where prominent and famous people are buried, naming the entrepreneur Max Grundig and the art collector Frieder Burda as examples. The city administration has also offered guided tours to the graves of well-known figures, which explain the history of the cemetery and changing attitudes towards death.
The grounds contain many old trees and finely worked gravestones. There are war graves from both world wars, including a plot with soldiers' graves from the Second World War, and a memorial to the victims of the world wars and of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. Looking closely at the monuments, you will find names, occupations and dates that tell a part of the town's history. Current visiting information is provided by the cemetery administration of the City of Baden-Baden.
