Germany

Germany is the centre of gravity of MEMENTO. The places range from the quiet park cemeteries of Hamburg and Bremen to Cologne's Melaten Cemetery and the old Jewish cemeteries of Waibstadt and Berlin-Weißensee. Since 2020, Germany's cemetery culture has been listed in the national inventory of intangible cultural heritage.

The galleries show how varied that culture is: forest cemeteries such as Stahnsdorf, historic churchyards in Dresden and Berlin, the tombs of the nineteenth-century middle classes. Many of these grounds are open to the public and well worth a quiet visit.
