Düsseldorf North Cemetery

Nordfriedhof Düsseldorf

The Nordfriedhof in Düsseldorf-Derendorf opened on 1 May 1884 and, at around 70 hectares, is the largest cemetery in the city. Alongside the listed historic section, with its neo-Gothic chapel and the Millionenhügel, it holds the graves of well-known artists, politicians and industrialists. Sven Fennema's photographs show gravestones and paths of this park cemetery.

About this place

The Berlin landscape architect Eduard Hoppe won the competition for the cemetery, for which planning began in 1882 and which opened in 1884. The historic section of about 21 hectares has been listed since 1987. The chapel and mortuary of 1887 were designed in neo-Gothic style by the city architect Eberhard Westhofen, and the chapel interior has wall paintings by Eduard von Gebhardt. The present main gate dates from 1936.

The character of the cemetery is shaped by the Millionenhügel, its highest point, with elaborate family tombs. They include the Zapp family tomb, the Haniel tomb as a granite obelisk and the temple-like Henkel tomb with a marble figure. Works of art include Paul Landowski's bronze of a youth at the Preis grave and the Miner with Lantern of 1902 after Enrico Butti.

Buried here are the painters Andreas and Oswald Achenbach, the sculptor Arno Breker, the actress Louise Dumont, the writer Clara Viebig and Rudolf Amelunxen, the first Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia. Ernst Barlach designed the grave of Louise Dumont and Gustav Lindemann. Next to the cemetery lies the new Jewish cemetery, opened in 1923 and cared for by the Jewish community.
